Annual Luncheon: Items for comment from this year’s Annual Luncheon Cruise on May 4, 2024: Vessel – MV CAPTAIN COOK III good and has been booked again for 2025 with a $3,000 deposit made. Ticket Prices were as per 2023. Members = $125 and Guests = $145. Numbers: and capacity of vessel we used was 130 including the reserved table for 10 in the forward stb’d section of lower deck, however, our headcount was 122. Seating Layout and Head Table facing dining area worked well. The requested cruise route around foreshore of upper harbour worked well. Our Guest Speaker from HULLBOT with his demonstration vehicle was well received. The adjusted Order of proceedings worked better this year. Menu & beverages was same as 2023 and accepted by all. No complaints. While we did not have the Band this year we played some “spotify” sea shanties thru the ferry PA system during early part of cruise. The ferry PA system did not work in all areas when our commentary was made while passing the Heritage Fleet base. This to be raised with the Captain Cook Manager. Invitations sent via email this year seemed to cover the communication task. The TryBooking system worked well, producing tickets online as required. The Treasurer still handled the older style EFT payments and communicated with email. Consideration for “Table Bookings” was considered but held over for future meetings.
The AMWS (Australian Mariners Welfare Society) has requested that we circulate their Monthly Newsletter via our LOAM Website. All agreed. Discussion about recruiting new Council Members.

President’s Report Capt. Murray Doyle. Due to having a heart valve replacement operation on the 18th April I will not be attending our Annual Luncheon, as I shall be in recovery. I look to the Vice President Mike Squires to fill in for me with the able assistance of our Secretary and Treasurer. The League has renewed its Corporate Membership with the Australian Mariners Welfare Society for 2024. An increased number of members have this year retired from active members. This is evidence that certain cohorts of our members are reaching an age where they can no longer fully participate in our activities much to their distress. I have written to them thanking them for their membership and wishing them the best in the future. They will always be welcome to attend our annual get together when they are able.
Secretary’s Report. Capt. John Cardelli gave an update on our membership profile. Acknowledged all the hard work and effort put in by our LOAM Treasurer and our LOAM WebMaster.

He confirmed that he has now opened a new Macquarie Bank Cash Management Account to replace our ANZ Account due to increasing ANZ fees. He went on to update us on the TriBooking site and the use of The Cube for cashless payments.
Webmaster’s Report. Submitted to the meeting and copied here - Our relationship with other maritime organisations continues to build as they see the value in our website. It’s encouraging to get not only their feedback but also their interest in wanting to communicate closely. I feel that information that we receive as a result that’s of an interest to our members is to be welcomed and most of them are able to prepare their material very well. An issue where we try and help others who contribute material is to get them to package what they offer so it’s a low data file that helps the functioning of the site. Thanks to all who contribute to the site and its success.
General Business. We now have a new Incorporation requirement to keep an AGM and Council Meeting Attendance List, which is to be signed by all attendees. Annual Cruise & Luncheon May 4, 2024. Annual Luncheon Cruise. Items discussed for next year’s Annual Luncheon Cruise: The “CAPTAIN COOK III” is now booked for Saturday 4th May 2024. Length of Cruise will be 4.5 hours (1200-1630) which worked well this year. Ticket Prices of $125 Members and $145 Guests were well accepted. The max. guest numbers for this ferry should remain around 130, with seating in the bow area to be used as a backup. Prior to the meeting our Patron Paul Scully-Powers forwarded to us an updated draft program for next year, which compresses all the formal proceedings together earlier in the cruise thus allowing more time after for less formal mixing prior to returning to berth. The Band music this year was not easy to hear in all areas of the vessel so it was questioned whether we really need them, and instead use recorded music. The singing of Sea Shanties was also questioned if worthwhile and was discussed. Seating and table allocation options was discussed at some length but without any final decisions made. A decision on the above items will need to be made at the November meeting.

Annual Cruise
All feedback from re our Annual Cruise has been positive re vessel and presentation. Everyone seems to have enjoyed time spent on the upper deck, greatly assisted by a beautiful Sydney day and our cruise itinerary charted by Secretary John Cardelli. Only compliant was about the audio system, which should fixed for next year. A number of members missed the singing of the shanties, this was a programming problem due to a couple of members wishing to sing their own songs leaving time in our tight program for normal shanties.
Leagues Profile
Captain Chris Skinner RAN Rtd. Our guest speaker has submitted his address to our annual luncheon to a number of publications this will help to lift our profile. Nautical Institute – the League’s Crest was shown prominently on flyers and Banner as a sponsor of the Nautical Institutes 50th Anniversary Party.

Secretary’s Report – John Cardelli (For Period from March 2022 to Aug. 2022).
I am continuing to consolidate the Membership database & the figures are as follows:
Membership numbers: FULL Members = 170. LIFE Members = 3. ASSOCIATE Members = 90. HONORARY Member = 2. PATRON = 1. TOTAL Members = 266.
I consider this year’s Luncheon Cruise was a success and generally enjoyed by all. The onboard PA and sound system let us down this year and has been taken up with Captain Cook Cruises. Our programme was very full and didn’t allow for any breaks in the proceedings, so I feel we should consider extending the cruise time if possible. We have been advised by Captain Cook that an extra 30mins can be done with an additional charge of $10/head, and this would be in addition to the anticipated increase of the cruise charge to $105/person. We have made a tentative booking of the CAPTAIN COOK III for next year. We expect to use the online TryBooking system for next year’s Luncheon Cruise. As the ferry was at the maximum capacity for the area we used, further consideration will need to be given to limiting ticket numbers.
Webmaster’s Report – John Cardelli tabled some notes from Allan Porter: The Website – of those who search for the League, there are some who use the search term ‘LOAM’ as an endeavour to find us. To overcome the fact that they will be taken to other websites, we’ll have to use the term ‘LOAM’ more frequently in texts that we put up on the site to try and attract the search engines to send ‘LOAM’ searchers our way.The efforts to entertain by members at the Luncheon were borne out of the 2021 LOAM lunch at the Kirribilli Club in ample space to do so, but this year it didn’t work in the very limited space, tight schedule and poor PA system on the vessel. However, it does seem though, that those who attend are keen to be entertained and be part of it. For members who have “Crossed the Bar”, I have offered to have a phone chat with family members and take notes over the phone to facilitate compiling an obituary and make is easier for the family. During the course of phone chats with family members, it would seem that family member/s have accompanied the late members on the League’s annual outings in the past and I therefore think that the League might consider a policy that following the passing of a Member, an invitation is extended by the League to a family member to attend the following League luncheon as a gesture honouring the Member. In chats with Austal representatives at an Aerospace Maritime Defence Aviation Expo at Darling Harbour in May this year they were somewhat cool to wanting to present (if it was agreed acceptable) to a League organised function in Sydney. Seems they know of the League in WA. (I have heard that a League of Ancients Mariners exists in WA either under that name or similar but have not been able to find a web mention).
Treasurer’s Report – John Cardelli on behalf of John Southwell-Keely tabled the following notes and figures: Have sent out invoices chasing up 135 outstanding membership fees and we are now down to only 90 members outstanding. The list of memorabilia stock discussed. The hard copies of Sons of the Seas could be given to new Members? January to June P&L report and the Bank Statement Reconciliation report tabled showing the League to be a healthy financial situation.
General Business
General discussion of all aspects of this year’s Luncheon Cruise. Some discussion regarding next year’s Luncheon Cruise, which included the likely change to using the online booking system TryBooking. The Captain Cook II has been tentatively booked for 2023. The time length of cruise required by us and the likely number of guests that can be accommodated. A guest speaker still needs to be found.
Other Business
The disbursement of $17,500 from the Estate of the Late Dr Robert Scot Skirving was discussed and proposed to go towards a Scholarship Grant made through the AMWS (Australian Mariner’s Welfare Society) up to an amount of $20,000. In addition, the erection of a memorial plaque in honour of Dr. Robert Scot Skirving at the Rookwood Mariners Memorial. These two items were proposed to proceed by Liam Gavin and seconded by John Harding then all in favour. Sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Sydney Cove Annual Regatta on Friday 18th November 2022 was discussed and all agreed that we would donate five LOAM umbrellas towards their raffle. As suggested by Allan Porter; The League should consider that following the passing of a member we could extend an invitation to a family member to attend the following Luncheon Cruise as a gesture honouring the Member. This was discussed and agreed that we would do this on a case by case basis.
The next Council meeting is planned to be held on 17th Nov. 2022 at 11.30.

Secretary’s Report - John Cardelli (For Period from Nov. 2021 to March 2022). Membership database is well established in a good working format. Some members details are still being updated from old membership nomination forms. The dispatch of the Annual News Letter and Luncheon Cruise response form was done in February with approx. 200 going to members via email. This was generally successful, and will be refined further for next year.
Membership numbers: Total 262, consisting of Full Members = 167, Life Members = 3, Associate Members = 90, Honorary Member = 1, Patron = 1.
Webmaster’s Report – Allan Porter gave an update on The League’s web site development, its roll of providing information for the Ancient Mariners and the broader industry. A Member Diary has been added to the site showing events of interest. He also referred to advice from the ACSC (Australian Cyber Security Centre) regarding a future change in domain names, and that we should register our “ancientmariner.au” name now.
Treasurer’s Report – John Cardelli on behalf of John Southwell-Keely tabled the 2021 P&L report and the Bank Statement Reconciliation report. The LOAM stock in had was also tabled. Memorabilia items and quantities discussed but no action needed.
Correspondence - John Cardelli listed and explained significant correspondence for the period since Nov. 2021.
General Business:
The proposal to make Sister Mary Leahy an Honorary Member and our Chaplain had been passed at the preceding AGM. The President, Murray Doyle will correspond with Sister Mary. The President gave an update on the Perpetual Trustees correspondence and The League’s receipt of $17,500 from the Estate of the Late Dr Robert Scott Skirving. Some of the uses of this money being considered are the mounting of a plaque at the Rookwood Cemetery, an Australian Maritime Bursary, and an announcement will be made at this year’s Luncheon Cruise followed by a toast by all of Port Wine. The President confirmed he will continue to send out a Formal Email to new members confirming their acceptance as a member and advising their new Roll Number. It was further agreed that on our Annual Luncheon Cruise a presentation will be made to new members of a Certificate of Membership. Probably done during the early part of the proceedings.
The Treasurer is now confirming via an email containing a LOAM Invoice, confirming the receipt of payments for Annual Membership, the purchase of tickets and other payments for the Annual Luncheon. Organization for this years Annual Luncheon was addressed/confirmed as follows:
Venue: We have booked and paid a deposit for the “Captain Cook III” with approx. max. capacity of 160. We have requested that we take a preferred route in the harbour for our cruise, with confirmation pending. Deck and seating plan for our cruise was circulated and layout agreed. Our Guest Speaker Capt. Christopher Skinner RAN Rtd. has confirmed his attendance with his wife The Hon Jillian Skinner. We agreed that A4 pages with relevant colour pictures of the subject matter be placed on each table rather than relying on projected images. Guest Speaker gift(s): LOAM Shield & LOAM memorabilia including Sons of The Seas. A proposed menu will include canapes on arrival after initial drinks served, to allow for better mingling and interaction prior to all being seated. It was agreed that two members will commence our singing segment with solo songs followed by sea shanties sung by all. It was agreed that we will use the same band as last year. It was agreed that we would not have a raffle but do a draw for a lucky door prize, possibly a Captain Cook Harbour Cruise.
Other Business:
The proposal from the preceding AGM to consider the use of an online booking service for future cruises will be investigated and reported at the next Council Meeting. Allan Porter proposed that as per advice from the Australian Cyber Security Centre regarding a future change in domain names, that we should register our “ancientmariner.au” name now asap. This was seconded by Rob McMahon and adopted. Agreed that a $500 donation towards the Nautical Institute's 50th anniversary event be provided and the League assist by distributing the Institute's flyer to the League membership.
Further to the issue raised by Rob McMahon regarding the recognition by the RSL of the Merchant Navy on Anzac Day and at other venues. Allan Porter then advised that following these same discussions at our November 25th 2021 meeting, he followed up to enquire if there was any action for the League to pursue to achieve a satisfactory outcome as proposed in the discussion. It was made clear to him in talks with the Secretary of the RSL Sub-branch, that the provisions of service in times of conflict were essential under the rules, regulations, and constitution of the RSL. The emphasis being on the word ‘Returned’ – meaning returned from active service in conflict. The name of the Sub-Branch as above will be preserved under an RSL Branch that will able to accommodate them. That veterans of the Merchant Navy who are ‘returned’ are fewer, is a fact but membership is not open to those who have not served in war zones. The ‘ravages of time’ are depleting all of those who are ‘returned’ from zones of conflict.
Council Meeting November 25, 2021. Membership database is continuing to be consolidated with focus on communication details, particularly email and mobile for text messaging. Membership stands at 265 consisting Full Members 165, Life Members 3, Associate Members 95, Honorary Members 1, Patron 1. Capt T.W.H. Kent, Capt. I.H. Anderson, Capt P. Walsh, Capt W.L. Gamble, Capt S. Loneragan were admitted as new members. It was agreed that a formal letter be sent out to new members confirming their acceptance as a member and advising their new roll number. It was agreed that we will now confirm by email or SMS the receipt of payments for Annual Membership and also for purchase of tickets for the Annual Luncheon.
The League website is growing and continuing to draw broad interest. A graphically digitised version of the League publication Sons of the Sea went up on the League’s website on April 13. With our grateful thanks, the original document was made available by Mrs Brenda Liley, widow of late Member and League Honorary Historian, Capt Ted Liley. Capt Allan Porter met with Mrs Liley on March 23 to assess all the material of the publication to prepare for digitalisation. Some enhancing of the Sons of the Sea in preparation for digital publication was carried out gratis by Capt Porter’s daughter, Caitlin. Capts Doyle & Porter met Mrs Liley on March 31 to collect several boxes of remaining historic documents that were held by Capt Liley. The future storage of the historic material is still to be decided.
The Financial report showed the League to be in a healthy position.
Proposal to make Sister Mary Leahy OAM an Honorary Member and officially League Chaplain. Agreed the matter to be proposed and confirmed at the next AGM.
The President gave an update on the Perpetual Trustees correspondence and distribution of funds from the Estate of the Late Dr Robert Scot Skirving, a co-founder of the League. In response, it was proposed that funds might be considered by the Trustees for a Dr Robert Scot Skirving memorial cruise, a Marine Scholarship together with The Seafarers Welfare Society and an appropriate Memorial Plaque to Dr Robert Scott Skirving mounted at the Maritime Museum.
Annual Luncheon (May 7, 2022). Venue: “Captain Cook III” with approx. capacity of 160. A Guest Speaker was identified by Allan Porter: Capt Christopher Skinner retired Royal Australian Naval Electrical Engineering Officer, a member of the Australian Nuclear Association, the Nuclear Engineering Panel of Engineers and editor of the publication "Nuclear Propulsion Roadmap for Australia". Option for some less formal presentations to be included in the program, including for those present who wish to put voice to singing leading into the Sea Shanties. It was agreed to use the same highly regarded music group as last year. It was agreed we will have a raffle with similar prizes to previous years. Invitations to be sent out as an attachment by email where possible. No formal Tickets to be sent out, but payment receipt messages will be sent by email or SMS where possible.
Discussion regarding the recognition of the Merchant Navy on Anzac Day and at other venues due to the passage of time reducing the number of veterans attending functions. This matter held over for future consideration.
AGM March 25, 2021. Minutes of the previous AGM held on March 17, 2020 were confirmed and adopted. The financial report (Profit and Loss Statement) of the League for the year ending December 31, 2020 together with the Auditors Report signed off in January 2021, were tabled, studied and adopted. Verbal reports were delivered by President, Vice President and Secretary. The President explained reasons (Covid) for selecting the Kirribilli Club venue and details of the function this year which will be held on May 1. Membership Fee & Application Fee: These were discussed in regards to the League’s Constitution and the present joining arrangements where the League publication Sons of the Sea is no longer issued to new members. (Plans are in hand to place the publication on the League’s website). The Secretary proposed that there be only one fee imposed on New Members, described as “Annual Fee $20 (Thru to April 30)”, which will appear on the Nomination for Membership Form. Proposal adopted. The next AGM is planned to be held in March 2022.
Council meeting, March 25, 2021. Minutes of the previous Council Meeting held on January 21, 2021 adopted. Cmdr. Kit Rynd and Brent Carr were confirmed as new members. Advice received and noted with regret those who have Crossed the Bar, Mr. F. Matthews, Mr. A. Hoogvliet, Capt. P. Duncan LVO RAN Rtd, and Capt. P. Sturt. Total membership stands at 254. Preparations are under way to create a web copy of the League’s publication, Sons of the Sea, a history of the League compiled by the League’s Honorary Historian Capt Ted Liley (1927 - 2018) for the League’s Centenary in 2003. The help and assistance of Mrs Brenda Liley in this project is gratefully appreciated. Enquiries are also being made to locate a permanent home for the League’s records. The Maritime Museum has been noted as a place to be approached. Planning for the May 1 Luncheon at the Kirribilli Club progressed during discussion. The venue allowing better compliance with Covid restrictions than would be the case with a venue afloat. It was decided: there would not be a raffle this year and that a door prize be given instead; and with a record of attendees kept that no formal tickets be issued. The Financial Report for period January 1 to March 24, 2021 shows the League’s finances in a healthy situation. Noted that the 56th Merchant Navy Memorial Service (Annual Commemoration) will be held at 11:00 /11th April at The Rookwood Cemetery. Agreed the President present a wreath on behalf of the League at the service. The next Council meeting is planned to be held June 24, 2021.
January 21 2021
Annual Luncheon: A good general discussion was held and the following points agreed: To go ahead and arrange a luncheon to be held on the traditional date of 1st Saturday in May – 1st May 2021. To have a land based function near the harbour and on a main transport line. To proceed with a booking (confirm availability and facilities) at The Kirribilli Club, Milsons Point, which is presently available. To make arrangements based on an attendance of approximately 100.
Agreed the League make a donation of $1,000 to the Tas Bull Fund to go towards the purchase of the newly developed Wi-Fi Hub units that provide broadband for the crews of merchant ships while in Australian ports.
Communication with our membership base was discussed at some length, which included the cost and time delays associated with mail-outs versus using e-mail to all members. It was agreed that we should create a new up to date e-mail list for our membership. A request will be made with the annual luncheon invitation letter for all members to provide e-mail contact details with advice that further updates or changes to functions will only be advised via e-mail.
Recruiting of new members was discussed and various approaches were shared. Blank applications forms should be in all council members pockets during our annual luncheon and at other times where appropriate.
November 16, 2020
Council Meeting. New council members were welcomed; Martin Skipper, Robert McMahon, Liam Gavin and Phil Hickey.
The main item under discussion was the planning of the 2021 annual luncheon, noting that its scheduling is conditional on Covid restrictions current at the time. Traditionally the luncheon is held on the first Saturday in May (May 1, 2021). Given the restrictive practices of Covid, options were considered including the holding of the luncheon ashore as opposed to the customary cruise on Sydney Harbour. Enquiries and planning are continuing. Enquiries are also being made as to how the League might assist the Seafarers Welfare Association given the experiences and limitations placed upon seafarers during the pandemic.
History of the League has become a topic of interest in two ways. (The history of the League can be found elsewhere in this website). First, is that one of the co-founders of the League of Ancient Mariners in 1903, Dr R Scot-Skirving apportioned a sum of 50 pounds in his estate left to his family following his death in 1956 and that it be distributed to the League by the beneficiaries of his estate upon their deaths. Formalities are now being attended to in order that the disbursement can be made. The second matter is that we have received personal seafaring and career information of one of the League’s early members, Capt Charles Alfred MacKinnon which makes for interesting reading. While the detailed records of individual members' period of membership of the League are unfortunately in the mists of time, the evidence suggests that Capt MacKinnon may have been one of those present when the League was formed in 1903. If not, it does appear he was very prominent in helping to establish the League in its very early stages. A news item on Capt MacKinnon will be included on the League’s website. A structured membership database capturing present and historic member data is a work in progress.
The financial report shows the League in a healthy situation. Outstanding member dues will be subject of friendly reminders. (Refer to Membership report below)..
Website. The site is growing is use and serving well to promote the League to members and the public.
It was agreed 10 League umbrellas be donated to Rotary Club of Sydney Cove for an auction to raise funds for the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.
Membership stands at 259 Members in total. However, many members are unfinancial as customarily, annual dues are paid at the same time as fees for the annual cruise & luncheon. As the cruise & luncheon was cancelled because of Covid, it’s felt many members have overlooked paying their annual dues. Steps are in place to issue friendly reminders.
March 17, 2020

Annual Harbour Cruise & Luncheon
The League's Annual Harbour Cruise & Luncheon was scheduled to be held on May 2, 2020. The decision to cancel the event was made in the interests of protecting the health and safety of all those who may be at risk of COVID-19. Fees paid by those to attend will be refunded.
Trustees representing the estate of the co-founder of the League of Ancient Mariners of NSW, Dr Robert Scot-Skirving have contacted the League in regard to a bequest of £50.00 by Dr Scot-Skirving’s beneficiaries. Dr Scot-Skirving died in 1956. (Refer to the webpage, About Us).
Membership of the League stands at: Patron 1; Life Members 3; Full Members 164; Associate Members 94; Honorary Members 1; representing a total of 263.
November 11, 2019
In an endeavour to ensure the 2020 Annual Cruise & Luncheon for Members and their guests always meets high standards and wherever possible is improved, considerable discussion took place about the organising and the arrangements for the cruise that will take place on May 2, 2010. (Refer to the news item on the News & Events page). On-board arrangements and catering, allowing the guest speaker’s address to be heard and appreciated by all, entertainment and sea-shanties and all manner of issues that go to ensuring that a great day-out on Sydney Harbour is enjoyed by all, requires close attention to detail. The meeting devoted much time to addressing these matters and we are grateful for those who have undertaken much of the ‘leg-work’ involved in meeting management of the cruise fleet. Other matters noted - the Financial Report shows the League in a healthy situation.
June 13, 2019
We were pleased to admit five new members bringing total membership to 260. Noted that the Annual Cruise & Luncheon held on May 4 was well supported by members and that the day regarded as an outstanding success. Matters were addressed in connection with next year’s Cruise to ensure continuity of the success of the annual Cruises. The new Website is finding appeal with increasing visits to the site. It was agreed that a ‘Links’ page be added to the site along with the Membership form and a list of available League items for sale to Members. Financial reports show the League in a healthy state. It was agreed that a sum of $1,000 be donated to the Merchant Navy War Memorial Fund to help facilitate improvements to the Merchant Navy War Memorial.
March 28 2019

Agreed the League donate $500 to the project. Also noted President, Capt Murray Doyle will lay a wreath on behalf of the League at the 55th Annual Commemoration at the Merchant Navy Memorial, Rookwood on Sunday April 14 2019. General Business: Nil
Next Meeting: November 14, 2024.

AGM March 31 2022 at 11:00 at 5-7 Barrack Street, Sydney. Minutes of the previous AGM on March 25, 2021 were confirmed and adopted.

Trustees representing the estate of the co-founder of the League of Ancient Mariners of NSW, Dr Robert Scot-Skirving have contacted the League in regard to a bequest of £50.00 by Dr Scot-Skirving’s beneficiaries. Dr Scot-Skirving died in 1956. (Refer to the webpage, About Us).

Agreed the League donate $500 to the project.
